The purpose of oedipus it to teach a lesson. in this ancient greek story, the main character cannot escape fate. his parents were told that their own son was going to kill his father and bear children with his mom frightened his parents cast his baby body to get killed. but the shepard in charge of taking his life changed that. he sold him. later on in life he ends up killing a group of people, wich was his biological fathers caravan. Oedipus becomes king and marrys a woman, who happens to be his mother (but he doesnt know that till just before he pulls his eyeballs out). this fable has a meaning. YOU CANT ESCAPE FATE!!
